Volvo has revealed more details about the electric car it plans to launch in 2019.
The Swedish automaker began wading into the electric vehicle space when it released a plug-in hybrid version of its XC90 SUV in August 2015.
Volvo told Automotive News that the vehicle will have a 250-mile range and a starting price between $35,000 and $40,000.
The news highlights how automakers are looking to compete with the likes of General Motors by producing long-range, mass market electric vehicles.

While Tesla is dominating the electric car market, every other manufacturer is left scrabbling to catch up.
Can you think of another electric vehicle that has about the same specs?
There’s no way we’re going to see an electric XC90 at the $35,000 pricepoint, but it’s easily possible Volvo will aim for a compact SUV bodystyle like the upcoming XC40 for its electric car.
Lex Kerssemakers, CEO of Volvo Car USA, told reporters in Geneva that Volvo’s first electric vehicle will have a range of 250 miles and a pricetag of $35,000-$40,000 when it debuts in two years’ time.
Kerssemakers said that the range and price are “what I put in as the prerequisite for the United States.

Volvo plans to give Tesla (TSLA) some legitimate competition in the affordable electric car market — Quartz

Tesla and Chevy will beat Volvo to the punch when it comes to delivering relatively affordable, functional electric vehicles.
In the near future, electric cars will no longer be the domain of the luxury-car owner.
Volvo, meanwhile, has an opportunity to bring the company’s trademark design and safety record to electric vehicles.
This would put Volvo’s electric offering in the same range as Tesla’s forthcoming Model 3, which is intended to be the company’s most affordable electric vehicle, and the Chevrolet Bolt, the first electric vehicle from General Motors.
The Chevy, Tesla, and Volvo vehicles are expected to have a range of over 200 miles before they need to be recharged.
