as mentioned in State Rep. Craig Ford of Gadsden, who for years was leader of the Democratic minority in the Alabama home, is stepping outside the party to run as an independent for the state Senate.
Ford reported today he is running in Senate territory ten, a chair held with Sen. Phil Williams of Rainbow City, who isn’t seeking reelection.
Ford became home minority leader after Republicans took control of the home in 2010 & held which position until final year.
Winning a Senate chair as an independent would not be unprecedented.
Sen. Harri Anne Smith of Slocomb, a previous Republican, was rivalled as an independent in territory 29 in southeast Alabama in 2010 & in 2014.
