Gutsy New Engine Joins the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox Lineup

We had a chance to drive the Equinox 2.0T, and it definitely makes the Equinox a livelier performer.
The Equinox 2.0T also improves on the towing capacity of the smaller engine by 1,000 pounds, with a rating of 3,500 pounds.
The 2018 Chevy Equinox’s base engine is a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder rated at 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque.
Thanks to an all-new nine-speed automatic transmission and weight reduction of 400 pounds over the previous-generation Equinox, the 2018 Equinox 2.0T returns an estimated 29 mpg highway.
For the front-wheel-drive Equinox LT, the turbocharged engine comes with the same upgrades but bundles in smaller 18-inch wheels, at a price of $2,395.

2018 Chevrolet Equinox 1.5T vs. 2.0T: A Tale of Two Turbos

The mechanical grip of the 235/50R19 Hankook Ventus S1 Nobel2 tires on our top-trim 1.5T Premier test car seemed appropriate for the segment and delivered top-of-class 0.83 g lateral acceleration.
In our last Big Test of CUVs, only the Hyundai Tucson 1.6T and the burly V-6 Jeep Cherokee—both with all-wheel drive—were quicker and grippier in this test.
The price seems right—starting at $24,525, the Equinox undercuts the cheapest 1.5T variants of the Escape and CR-V by $1,620 and $3,110, respectively.
This welcome power infusion comes at a cost of just 2 or 3 EPA combined mpg rating points and $29–$34 dollars per horsepower on the LT or Premier trim grades.
Allow us to make our case in favor of the quite good redesign of Chevrolet’s strong-selling midsize crossover, the Equinox.
