Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling 182,308 Jeep Wrangler SUVs in the U.S. from the 2016 and 2017 model years to fix airbag sensors that may unplug during a crash, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.A change in assembly methods on 2016 and 2017 Wrangler models can compromise the two front impact sensors and completely disable the airbags and pretensioners in a crash. The Toledo, Ohio, plant routed the wiring to these sensors in a different configuration from the 2015 Wrangler to speed up production.

Around 225,000 Jeep Wrangler models are being recalled by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles for an impact sensor fault that can prevent the airbag from working in an accident.During a frontal impact the headlight can be pushed into the impact sensor’s wiring, rendering it useless before it is able to activate the deployment of airbags and tensioning of seatbelts.FCA discovered the issue during its own internal tests and said there have been no known injuries to owners.

The US off-road specialist has found a serious issue with its current Jeep Wrangler – which is, as we all know, eagerly awaiting an all-new generation to arrive next year.According to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ brand, the wiring in certain Wranglers may detach from the front impact sensor ahead of sending the signal to the Occupant Restraint Controller – and as per the recall notice, that may cause non deployment of the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in the event of an accident. The automaker has decided to announce a safety campaign for 182,308 Wranglers across the United States, from the 2016 and 2017 model years, and manufactured between June 16, 2015, and August 14, 2016.
