DETROIT — Spy photographers have captured the first public images of Fiat Chrysler’s upcoming midsize pickup based on the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The pickup will follow the redesigned Wrangler SUV, which FCA plans to begin producing in November in Toledo. Production is scheduled for the current Jeep Wrangler line at FCA’s Toledo, Ohio, assembly complex after the plant receives a new paint shop next year. The photos indicate that the as-yet-unnamed pickup will get the Wrangler’s design cues and off-road chops. The pickup is projected to be at U.S. dealerships in 2019.

These are the first shots of the 2019 Jeep Wrangler pickup truck testing on public roads in Michigan. Plans by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to launch a Jeep pickup truck have long been rumored, but these up-close photographs of a prototype show what the vehicle will look like. Midsize pickup truck sales grew more than 25 percent in the U.S. last year to almost 450,000. It’s expected to be based on the long-wheelbase Wrangler Unlimited platform, with similar front-end styling and traditional Jeep styling towards the rear. Like the Wrangler, the pickup will adopt more aluminum panels to save weight, while still allowing for good hauling and off-road capabilities.
