Donald Tusk has been chosen to head the European Council for a second term. Former Polish prime minister Donald Tusk was chosen to head the European Council for a second term during a summit on Thursday, despite opposition from the Polish government. In a tweet following the vote, Tusk wrote: “Grateful for trust & positive assessment by [the European Council]. The next term of office of the European Council President runs from 1 June 2017 until 30 November 2019. The appointment was considered “good news” by former Polish prime minister and member of Tusk’s Civic Platform (PO) party, Ewa Kopacz.

As it stated in Today, leaders discussed the European economy with the President of the European Central Bank. The first thing I want to say is that I am really grateful for the trust the European Council have placed in me. Things are getting better, and they are getting better in every Member State of the Union. To the countries of the region, our message will be clear: “the European Union remains faithful to the promise of Thessaloniki and fully committed to the stability and prosperity of the region”. I want leaders to reconfirm the European perspective for the Western Balkans.
